Before You Book That Villa / Airbnb in Jaipur — Do This First
By Om Kanta Farms · Ajmer Road, Bhankrota, Jaipur
You've found a listing that looks perfect. The photos are stunning — a glittering pool, beautifully styled rooms, a lush garden. The price is right. The description ticks every box. You're about to hit confirm.
Wait five minutes.
Not because the listing is necessarily misleading — many aren't. But because a short burst of homework before you book can be the difference between a weekend that exceeds expectations and one that quietly disappoints from the moment you walk through the gate.
Here's what to check, what to ask, and what it says about a property when they genuinely welcome the scrutiny.
The Photographs Tell You What the Host Wants You to See
Professional photography is standard now. A wide-angle lens, the right lighting, and a skilled photographer can make a 10×10 room look palatial. This isn't fraud — it's marketing. But it means the photographs answer one question only: what does this place look like at its absolute best?
They don't tell you what it looks like on a regular Tuesday. They don't tell you whether that pool in the hero shot is actually the size it appears, or whether the "lush garden" is a patch of lawn that's seen better days.
What to do:
Look for photographs taken from multiple angles. A listing with twelve photos of the same space from slightly different positions is hiding something. A listing with a mix of wide shots, medium shots, and detail shots — including less glamorous areas like the bathroom, the kitchen, the parking area — is usually more honest.
Look for natural light photographs rather than heavily edited night shots. The golden hour fairy-light photo is beautiful; a daytime shot of the same space tells you far more.
Look for evidence of real use. A property where people actually stay usually has small signs of life in the photos — a book on a table, a chair slightly out of position. Perfectly sterile staging is not always a good sign.
And finally — look at when the photos were taken. Some listings carry photographs from years ago. The property may have changed significantly. More on how to verify this below.
Ratings Are More Nuanced Than a Number
A 4.8 rating sounds excellent. And it often is. But it requires a second look.
How many reviews support it? A 4.9 from three reviews tells you almost nothing. A 4.7 from forty reviews tells you quite a lot. The number of reviews matters as much as the score.
How recent are the reviews? Scroll past the headline rating and read the actual reviews, sorted by most recent. A property with glowing reviews from two years ago and silence since is telling you something. Properties change — ownership, management, maintenance standards, all of it.
What do the negative reviews actually say? Every honest property will have at least one critical review. Read those carefully. A guest complaining that the pool was too cold is a minor quibble. A guest mentioning that the photos didn't match reality, or that the caretaker was unresponsive, or that the property felt neglected — these patterns matter.
Does the host respond to reviews? A host who engages thoughtfully with feedback — including critical feedback — is one who takes the experience seriously. A host who either doesn't respond or responds defensively to every complaint is showing you who they are before you arrive.
The Listing Description — Read Between the Lines
Certain phrases in Airbnb listings have become so common that they've lost meaning. "Cosy" often means small. "Charming" can mean outdated. "Walking distance" is doing a lot of work in many listings.
More specifically to pool villas and farm stays — watch for these:
"Pool access" is not the same as "private pool." Pool access may mean you share it with other guests, or that it's available only during restricted hours.
"Sleeps 12" needs to be broken down. Does that mean 12 on beds, or 8 on beds and 4 on mattresses on the floor? Both are legitimate — but you should know which one you're booking.
"Fully equipped kitchen" can mean anything from a complete modular kitchen to a single induction cooktop with two pots.
"Peaceful location" sometimes means the caretaker is 40 minutes away if something goes wrong.
None of these are necessarily dealbreakers — but know what you're actually getting.
How to Verify That the Images Are Current and Accurate
Ask the host directly. A simple message: "Could you share a few recent photos of the pool and the common areas? I want to make sure what I've seen is current." A confident, honest host will respond immediately with recent photos or a video. A host who deflects, sends the same listing photos, or simply doesn't reply is giving you important information.
Check the host's other listings and social media. Many property hosts maintain an Instagram page. If @odkantafarms or any similar handle exists, the recent posts will tell you far more about the current state of the property than listing photos ever could.
Look for guest-generated content. Some guests tag locations in their posts. Search the property name or location on Instagram. What guests photograph and share is always closer to reality than what a host curates.
Ask for a video call or a visit. This is the most underused option available to anyone booking a private property. A five-minute video walkthrough answers every question that photographs leave open. Any host who is genuinely confident in their property will say yes immediately.
At Om Kanta Farms — We Welcome the Homework
We're transparent about this because we have nothing to hide — and because we believe guests who do their research and choose us based on that research are the guests who have the best stays.
Here is our position, plainly:
We allow visits before booking, by prior appointment. If you're in Jaipur and want to come see the property before you commit — the pool, the suites, the garden, the Farmhouse Tavern — call us and we'll set it up. Walk around, ask Manoj anything, see it with your own eyes.
If a visit isn't possible, schedule a video call. We'll walk you through the property on a live video call at a time that works for you. You'll see the pool, the rooms, the outdoor spaces — exactly as they are on that day, not as they looked on a photographer's best morning two years ago.
Our listing photographs are current. We update them regularly. The pool you see is the pool you'll swim in.
Our reviews are real. Read every one of them, including the critical ones. We respond to all feedback, and we take it seriously enough to act on it.
We're not the right choice for every group — we're a specific kind of property with a specific kind of experience to offer. But for the group that's right for us, we'd rather you know exactly what you're getting before you arrive than be surprised in either direction.
A Quick Pre-Booking Checklist
Before confirming any private villa or farm stay booking:
Read the most recent 10 reviews, not just the headline rating
Note how many total reviews the listing has
Ask the host for current photos or a video if the listing photos feel staged or dated
Clarify whether the pool is private or shared, and whether there are any timing restrictions
Confirm the actual sleeping arrangement — beds versus floor mattresses versus sofa beds
Ask who is on-site if something needs attention during your stay
Ask whether you can bring an external caterer or if the property has restrictions
Check the cancellation policy before you pay
